Alphawaves (Bonus Track Version)

Alphawaves (Bonus Track Version)

With an amazing second album, Phil Manley ramps up his Life Coach project beyond the next level. As a seasoned producer and multi-instrumentalist, he easily could have recorded Alphawaves by himself. But knowing that chemistry comes from collaboration, Manley brought in drummer extraordinaire Jon Theodore (Mars Volta, One Day As a Lion) and six-string luminary Isaiah Mitchell (Earthless, Golden Void). The opening “Sunrise” sets an Eastern tone, with Manley’s backmasked guitar playing alongside the Indian-influence drones of an electronic tanpura as Theodore gently rumbles his drums and plays traditional prayer bells. This bleeds into the title track, a Conny Plank–worshipping salute to all things Krautrock—save for Theodore’s percussive pyrotechnics, which (along with an uplifting piano melody) have more in common with Bob Seger’s “Hollywood Nights.” The gauzier-textured “Limitless Possibilities” aims for early Popol Vuh but takes a delightful detour to early-'90s British shoegazing with walls of guitar distortion and elongated inflections that recall “Leave Them All Behind”–era Ride.
