Album Review

Filled with bubbling electronics and light, G-rated club anthems, Ocean Eyes sets its sights on the MySpace generation, targeting the younger siblings of those who bought the Postal Service's Give Up six years earlier. This is computerized pop music, replete with programmed drum loops, digital symphonies, and all the amenities of modern recording software. Only Adam Young's vocals carry a hint of human presence, and his fanciful lyrics — which turn even the most mundane content (see "Dental Care," a good ol' fashioned ode to oral hygiene) into whimsy — serve to strengthen the album's escapist appeal. Such syrupy sweetness builds to a feverish pitch throughout the album's 12 tracks, peaking during the viral sensation "Hey Seattle" and its sonic cousin, "On the Wing." Those who don't have a sweet tooth should stay away, but Ocean Eyes will serve as a tasty dessert for those who can stomach it.

What's the big deal?

You know when you eat or drink something so sugary you can feel your teeth rotting? That is how I feel listening to this album. The man behind the album is 23 year old Adam Young, an insomniac who made this album in his parent’s basement. He lists Jesus and G rated movies as his biggest influences, and listening to this album would make you wonder if Jesus has permanently saved his soul from ever experiencing a sad feeling.

He embodies the dream of being that kid who makes music in his parent’s basement, and then somehow makes it onto a major label. It is not hard to tell why; his music is highly targeted and easily marketed. It attracts the best kind of fans to have, teenage girls, and his lyrics never near anything that is even slightly controversial. When anyone but a teenage girl listen to one of his attempted hooks, they may let out a small sigh or groan. But that's the part teenage girls love the most.

Many people compare his work to The Postal Service. That probably comes from his voice sounding similar to Ben Gibbard’s, but the issue with that comparison is that the instrumentation in “Give Up” is far superior. Gibbard’s lyrics are also far better. While most of Young’s lyrics are meaningless and occasionally stupid happy-go-lucky tails, there is one song that stands out in particular. The song, “Dental Care’ is literally about going to the dentist. I kid you not.

There are a few redeeming qualities about this album. The male/female chorus in “The Saltwater Room” is done well, and a few of the songs have nice poppy hooks and big choruses. Adam Young’s voice is pretty good, on a few songs you could even swear you are listening to Ben Gibbard sing to you about going to the dentist. Although, it is still hard to get over how sugary this album is. A few more listens and I might have to actually go to a dentist.
