Raw and Un-Kutt

Kutt Calhoun’s third album provides a welcome balance between the bizarre innovations of Tech N9ne’s Strange Music circle and the more traditional strain of bass-heavy street rap. “Laughing Stock,” “Somethin’s Gotta Give” and “Flip It Ova” exemplify the Strange Music blueprint. These songs combine highly technical, fearsome rapping with beats that are bombastic but slightly deranged. It’s a formula that has made Kutt and his partners one of the most successful underground rap cliques, but it’s also good to hear him forge into new territory on Raw and Un-Kutt. “She Wants Me” is a brand of funk so smooth and stealthy that it coaxes into the fold the legendary Too $hort, who sounds great alongside these younger, more wild disciples. The best songs here blend Kutt’s gangsta muscle with Strange Music’s unhinged aesthetic. “That’s Kutt Calhoun” and “Get Kutt” are monstrous hybrids of crunk and electro funk. Both songs prove Kutt’s mettle as a rapper, but more than that they confirm his reputation as a true hip-hop individualist.
