Muu's Way

Muu's Way

Just as Prince once mixed his records with an ear towards how much he could take out and still have a song, L.A.’s Woom work with an effective minimalism where what isn’t played makes as much of an impact as what is. Recorded in an old barn in Eastern Massachusetts, the sound is both primal and futuristic, based on vocals from the duo of Sara Magenheimer and Eben Portnoy who overlook a musical world that twists the Talking Heads with Fiery Furnaces and any number of avant-garde musical peers into their own idiosyncratic brew. “Foggy Dew” is an old-time traditional done a cappella to great effect. “Under Muu” is a melancholy instrumental. “The Hunt” is a robotized funk where beats and sawing instruments bring on an apocalypse worthy of the Stone Age. “Back In” clops as much as it pops with a retro-girl-group enthusiasm. “OK” is the sound of their computer system syncing to a test pattern. “Sister” is a folk song that dreams of world music. Woom offer plenty of ambition at a fraction of the sound.
