Aina Haina

Badman Recording Co.'s label head Dylan Magierek, who saw fit to release albums from My Morning Jacket, Mark Kozelek, and The Innocence Mission, now has his own power duo. And that duo's opening EP, Aina Haina (pronounced "Eye-na High-na"), is a testament to Magierek's unfailing ear. Just as he understood what made other artists the best at what they did, he and guitarist/singer Mike Ailes know how to bring out the best in what they do. The six songs here ("Side 2" isn't a song but an introduction to what would be the EP's second side) show off an economy of style where nothing overstays its welcome. The solos are kept to a tasteful minimum, and the harmonies bring out the subtler shades of the mostly hard-riffing power tunes. The band chemistry was maintained by recording the instruments live, guaranteeing a sharp rhythmic give-and-take on the macho rock of "Help Me Through" and the rough shuffle of the Bad Company–like "Foolin' Around (In the Sun)."
