This 2001 compilation is curiously sequenced in backwards chronology, starting with the pointed and dauntless “Ladykillers” from 1996’s Lovelife and bookending with the wistful “Etheriel” from Lush's 1989 debut mini-album Scar. Regardless, even ardent fans should be pleased with the selections comprising a handful of standouts from each of their four albums alongside various single and EP b-sides, most notably their gauzy and seductive cover of the Gist’s “Love At First Sight.” Most fans first fell in love with the band shortly after Cocteau Twins’ Robin Guthrie gave his King Midas touch to the production of “De-Luxe” from the 1990 Mad Love EP which rests comfortably here between the weightless “Monochrome” and “Sweetness and Light,” one of a handful of tunes from this bygone indie era that still gets the kids dancing at various Anglophile-themed club nights. Mid-career single “Nothing Natural” is another notable number that not only epitomizes the shoegaze sound, but also the collective tone coming from the 4AD label in its heyday.
