Bounce Around

Fans of New Zealand’s The Bats might fear that Minisnap brings dark news to the world of Kiwi indie pop: does Minisnap’s existence portend an end to the Bats’ 27-year career? Is Bats/Minisnap guitarist Kay Woodward’s “borrowing” of her fellow Bat bandmates really only temporary? While die-hard Bats fans ponder those disastrous scenarios, we suggest they pour a tall lemonade, put their feet up and enjoy the sounds of Minisnap’s debut, a collection of songs as bright and bouncy as any of the Dunedin jangle of the last thirty years. Sparkling pop gems like “New Broom” and Crooked Mile” are buoyed by Woodward’s cotton candy voice, while tracks like “Innocent” and “Rehash” thrum with a darker tone underneath the shiny bits, recalling the sounds of quintessential Dunedin band The Clean (cousin band to The Bats, they share guitarist/singer Robert Scott). Original inspiration the Velvet Underground is felt in the chugging rhythm and wiry guitar of “Coppice,” but a pastoral, more subdued ‘60s vibe gives “Fred’s Song” and “A Walk in the Dark” a sweeter and more melancholy tint.
