Had her acting career not taken off as Peg Bundy in Married with Children or as Gemma Teller Morrow on Sons of Anarchy, Katey Sagal would be in the musical trenches, having already put in time as a backup singer for Bette Midler and Bob Dylan and released a number of albums over the years. Sagal’s husband—Sons of Anarchy creator Kurt Sutter—has found ways to include her music on that show. 2013’s Covered cashes in on the fact that she’s at a peak in popularity and therefore can stand out in a world that's rarely interested in singers who enjoy singing above all else. The track selection is sharp and wide, with Tom Petty’s “Free Fallin’,” Jackson Browne’s “For a Dancer,” Steve Earle’s “Goodbye” (as a duet with Browne), Joni Mitchell’s “For Free," and Ron Sexsmith’s “Secret Heart” proving Sagal has quite an ear for great material.
