What's Going On...?

By the mid-2000s, Eason Chan had established himself as one of Asian pop’s biggest stars, with his cheeky attitude and undeniable vocal talent winning over audiences all over the continent. The Hong Kong singer moved to the Universal Music Group subsidiary Cinepoly after years of tirelessly releasing music in Mandarin and Cantonese on smaller local labels, and his fourth release on Cinepoly finds him leaning into his rocker side, veering between peppy pop-punk and loose-limbed cuts that put a Cantopop spin on stretched-out ’70s folk rock.  What’s Going On…? opens in dramatic fashion, with sweeping strings introducing the lead track “裙下之臣 (The Noble Woman Underneath the Skirt),” a theremin-laced pomp-rock cut on which Chan salutes the seductive power of women; the way his voice trembles on the verses drives home his descriptions of desire. The larger-than-life vibes are followed by “最後的嬉皮士 (The Last Hippie),” a punchy pop-punk cut on which he channels the bellow of Green Day frontman Billie Joe Armstrong as he pokes fun at Woodstock-era mythology; it’s punctuated by a squealing guitar solo that adds a giddiness to the proceedings. Another wild tonal shift ensues with “白玫瑰 (White Rose),” a stripped-down ballad where Chan’s whispered vocal is seemingly pursued by a weepy solo violin.  The album is loosely divided into three acts, and its middle section is focused on loss. “黑擇明 (Reaper Will Find You)” is an electro-rock track that uses an EKG’s incessant beeping as a rhythmic element and references Death Note; the icy piano ballad “富士山下 (Sorrow Is Meaningless)” grapples with grief, Chan sounding as if he’s about to break into sobs; and the pensive “不如不見 (Better Not to Meet)” attempts to find closure. The back section of the record returns to the rock world, with “心深傷透 (Deeply Hurt)” leaning into the harder-edged side of pop-punk and “天公地道 (Fair Play)” adding boisterous strings to the loose-limbed riffing and shimmering keyboards of Laurel Canyon folk rock. Eason Chan’s career had evolved impressively by the time What’s Going On…? came out, but this album shows that his growth as an artist had only just begun.
