Shadow Songs

Shadow Songs

For his second solo album, the Birmingham, Ala.–based Preston Lovinggood revisits five songs from his debut album, Sun Songs, and then moves on to his newer work. Sun Songs had been a lo-fi presentation of his tunes produced by Taylor Hollingsworth, known for his work with Dead Fingers and Conor Oberst and The Mystic Valley Band. Shadow Songs is Lovinggood’s work in a professional studio with producer Darrell Thorpe, known for his work with Beck and Thom Yorke. Together, they recorded in Birmingham and in Los Angeles, where Lovinggood experienced a sense of objectivity that results from taking oneself out of comfortable, familiar environs. As a natural result, the songs open up, and tracks like “Sun Songs,” “Little Gods," and “Shipwrecked” take on new dimensions that break them out of the standard singer/songwriter mode. The new tunes reflect an interesting mix of acoustic-based origins and tasteful rhythms, harmonies, and pretty organ. There's a drift into psychedelia on “T.M.I. (False Lover Blues)” and subliminal pop on “Cage Dive.”
