Gasoline Alley

Gasoline Alley

On his second solo album, Rod Stewart beautifully combines folk instrumentation with rock dynamics. His vocals are both hoarse and honeyed on the title track, as they wrap around Ronnie Wood’s singing slide guitar. Mandolins and acoustic guitars trickle and jangle throughout the record to yearning effect, while Stewart proves early on that he’s a fine interpreter of others’ songs, turning The Rolling Stones’ “It’s All Over Now” into an infectious boogie and doing a soulful, sensitive reading of Dylan’s “Only a Hobo.”
