Texas Swing

Texas Swing

Though often considered a bluesman, Clarence "Gatemouth" Brown's creative reach extends far beyond any one genre. For over 50 years, his freewheeling sound has mixed jazz and country influences, along with Southwestern-style blues, into a hard-to-classify but easy-to-love style. Texas Swing is an extra-generous helping of Brown's music from two of his best 1980s albums, the Grammy-winning Alright Again! and One More Mile. He lays down lead guitar lines with effortless finesse, shining especially on "Alligator Boogaloo" and "Frosty." His down-home fiddle playing sizzles on "Song for Renee," and his gravelly vocals add grit to "Stranded." From big-band numbers ("Information Blues") to funky Louisiana-style tunes ("Sunrise Cajun Style") and crisp-cut blues ("One More Mile"), Brown leads his group with spark and spirit. His horn section -most notably sax player Bill Samuels - provides tight and snappy embellishment. Whether he's sounding rootsy or refined, Brown gets down in style on Texas Swing.
