I Found My Backpack 3

One of the best Bay Area rappers working today, Mistah FAB is a rare artist who's completely comfortable in multiple lanes. He can go dumb with the best of 'em at the sideshow (he was a major player in the local Hyphy movement), but he also impresses as a straight-up lyricist, with intricate wordplay influenced by Bay brethren like Del and Souls of Mischief. The third installment of his always on-point I Found My Backpack series, this presents another 20 songs that prove how advanced and intelligent an emcee Fabby Davis Jr. can be. From the reflective, career-analyzing jump-off "Dreams" (produced by Warren G) to the memory-lane dedications to his departed mother "Before You Go" and "See You Again" and the never-give-up anthem "I'm Still Here," we get a more personal and deeper side of the artist who's best known to the masses (if at all) for rambunctious party jams like "Ghost Ride It." The production here is appropriately soulful, loaded with vintage samples that perfectly complement his autobiographical storytelling (somewhat reminiscent of Jay's Blueprint album). It's a serious listen to be sure, and some of Fab's best work to date.
