Dig. Sow. Love. Grow.

Dig. Sow. Love. Grow.

Though the shaggy-haired Cincinnati trio Buffalo Killers sport a name reminiscent of one of Woody Guthrie’s most desperation-wracked songs, their swaggering, psychedelia-infused blues-rock leans more toward the good-time choogle of Creedence, Steppenwolf, or Mountain. Since rising from the ashes of ramshackle garage-punkers Thee Shams in 2006, The Buffalo Killers have been progressively tightening their sound, setting their musical sights on territory that's halfway between the neo-hippy harmonizing of West Coast folkniks Fleet Foxes and the scuzz-rock bluster of The Black Keys. Dig. Sow. Love. Grow. is the group’s fourth and by far most polished release. The lead single, “Hey Girl,” sports willowy harmonies on its chorus, but these eventually give way to a barbed guitar break deliberately reminiscent of Neil Young’s incisive guitar work on classics like Zuma and Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere. Dig. Sow. Love. Grow. is a carefully written, expertly recorded album that stands as the group’s most accomplished effort to date.
