After the success of Phantasmagoria, producer Jon Kelly and the band—led by singer Dave Vanian, whose theatrical vocals had taken the group far from its punk roots toward a sound that was The Damned's alone—decided to further explore the connections between goth and psychedelia. The Damned achieved this with a cover of Love's "Alone Again Or," which had been the opening track of that L.A. group's 1967 psychedelic masterpiece Forever Changes. For The Damned's own songs, it ventured far and wide, with a piano piece ("The Portrait") and modern rock tracks based in cavernous reverbs and blurry mixes between guitars and keyboards that create a mysterious gestalt ("Anything," "Restless," "In Dulce Decorum"). Though Anything was critically panned for its excesses, many fans took the grandeur to heart, appreciating the dreamlike textures for their ability to create new worlds. The extended version includes various alternate mixes, the single "Eloise," and a few outtakes, all making for a generous look at a misunderstood time.
