iTunes Review
Ex D Generation frontman Jesse Malin has gone from Johnny Thunders wannabe to Bruce Springsteen acolyte as his third solo album further mines heartland alt-country rock that sounds like a crossbreeding of Graham Parker, John Cougar Mellencamp and Paul Westerberg (whose Replacements track “Bastards of Young” gets a slowed-to-a-crawl rendition). Malin packs his album like the Love Boat with a star-studded cameo guest package featuring Springsteen, Jakob Dylan, Ryan Adams and Queens of the Stone Age’s Josh Homme. Despite the celebrity sideshow, the album boils down to Malin’s well-studied heartland-street-walkin’ tunes that cover familiar ground. “Don’t Let Them Take You Down (Beautiful Day!),” “Broken Radio” and “Lucinda” would all slot comfortably onto a Steve Earle album without a pause. Here, it’s Malin’s gravelly whine seducing the hard-luck stories and celebrating the day with a shaded optimism made even more palatable by its Pete Yorn-influenced pop hooks. Much like the power pop aficionados who reassemble the spare parts of the Beatles-Beach Boys-Byrds-Big Star catalog in search of their own sound, Malin picks through the bodies and minds of the best street troubadours to find his own shot at amazing grace.
Customer Reviews
Buy it for Bruce, stay for the rest.
I bought this one for the duet with Springsteen on "Broken Radio," and the fact that I keep hearing that this guy is an undiscovered treasure that critics and music lovers alike can't believe has yet to break out. I previously picked up his EP here at itunes just to see what the fuss was about. It was good, though I was underwhelmed given the hype. This album fares better. Jesse isn't the rock poet his heros are, and his thin vocals sometimes leave something to be desired, but this album is undeniably infectious, and in a time of gimicky rock, he keeps it real with garage band style guitar-driven classic rock. Even if he is yet no Springsteen, he is at least trying, rather than selling out to seel more albums more quickly to the masses. Keep it up Jesse, and they will come.
Welcome To The Revolution
This is Malin's answer to Springsteen's THE RIVER. More aggressive in reach, full of grit and boast some big names; but still low on substance. Yet thats exactly what makes it unevenly great. The one problem is the generic polished sound instead of jumping punk sound on the rock tracks; yet they still remain loud. By exposing the same vein of arrested development that urns for nostalgic days of rock, New York, girls and sex. Each track deceptively becoming more invigorating with each listen. If your a fan of rock, and punk; not this generic mainstream Idol Fallout Boy Timberlake stuff they feed kids today; this your album. The last DJ out there has heard the prayers. Let the revolution begin.
Must have this for your own.
Love it. What a talent and what real honest emotion he expresses. "Aftermath" is one my favorites and "Broken Radio" not far behind it. Everyone should hear and then see Jesse perform. His performances are even better than his album if that is possible.
