Christian singer/songwriter Mitch McVicker remains best known for his early association with the legendary Rich Mullins, but Underneath makes clear that his own work is well worth discovering. Ranging from scrappy folk-rock (“Count on Me”) to reverent pop balladry (“Savior, Savior”) and simmering neo-soul (the title track), his latest work combines earnest vocals with acoustic guitar–centered production that keeps the songs’ rough edges intact. “Danger” especially stands out for its spiritual humility and sense of wonder. Underneath is the work of a substantial talent who makes a statement here of artistic maturity and renewed faith.
