Jaded Future EP

The French DJ crew Birdy Nam Nam makes three songs sound like 10 on its 2012 EP Jaded Future. Aside from the crew's uncanny ability to inject its collective turntable skills into electronic dance music, Jaded Future also boasts Birdy Nam Nam’s penchant for playing sub-genre hopscotch while retaining a signature sound. The trap-dappled title track opens with the “Original Mix,” dropping gobs of bass before the “Foreign Beggars Remix” lets emcees Orifice Vulgatron and Metropolis throw down rhymes that fit perfectly between the track’s cracks. The “Pelican Fly Remix” sticks closer to the original, save for thick layers of futuristic synths. The original mix of “Going In” tweaks the trap formula with pitched-down vocals and a stuttering bass. It’s good, but the following “Goin’ Hard Mix” by Skrillex breathes more life into the track with drum and bass highs and deep dubstep lows—the bass drop here is a window-rattling boomer. Skrillex’s “Goin’ Down Remix” plays like a slightly mellowed sequel. Teki Latex provides smooth vocals for “Cadillac Dreams,” the EP's most chilled-out cut.
