With their band project Egypt Central in the rear-view mirror, Joey Walser and Blake Allison have forged a new sound as Devour the Day. It's a more sonically omnivorous project unafraid to merge earnest anthems and electronic touches into their propulsive brand of heavy rock. On "Oath," lightning-crunch riffage underpins Allison's confessional lyrics, while "Reckless" is the rare active rock song to combine fiery power chords and acoustic guitars against a waltzing beat, complete with triumphant "ooohhh"s to lift a lighter and sing along to. The single "Good Man" is a highlight. It's a dramatic track down to its plucked violins, which nod to Linkin Park at their most throat-shredding and Rage Against the Machine at their most bottom-heavy.
