The deep-voiced, punkish-looking Rita Indiana & Los Misterios revitalized merengue with El Juidero, adding bits of alt-rock and electronics to Latin rhythms and percussion—with congas and programmed drums in tandem. You can tell from her lyrics that Indiana, who also writes novels, is a born storyteller: the title track, about outlaws on the run, builds in suspense as a result of her rapid-fire delivery. The band adds reggae rhythms to a cover of Eurythmics' "Sweet Dreams" ("Dulces Suenos") and gets spacey on the epic finale, "Equeibol."
