Painting the Invisible

Painting the Invisible

Critics have sometimes griped that few Contemporary Christian artists possess a deep knowledge of Scripture. Vicky Beeching is an exception to this truism — she’s an Oxford-educated theologian as well as an accomplished singer/songwriter. Scholarship and wisdom informs her sophomore release, Painting The Invisible (2007). But don’t be misled by her master’s degree — Beeching’s music is aimed at the spirit, not just the mind. In many respects, she’s comparable with worship leader/singer Chris Tomlin in both her devotion to Biblical principles and her humility as a performer. Tracks like “Join The Song” (a pop/rock updating of the standard hymn “The Doxology”), “Hallelujah What A Savior” and “Everlasting Arms” are melodically-graceful, lyrically-vivid praise numbers. Beeching adds a tinge of Celtic color to “The Wonder Of The Cross” and rides a pulsing rock rhythm on “Suddenly.” The most autobiographical tune is “Twenty-Six Summers,” an invocation of passing seasons and rock-solid faith. Most uplifting of all is the guitar-driven believer’s anthem “Only Your Love.” While Beeching’s songwriting shows a mature touch, there’s a youthful eagerness to her clear-toned vocals. Smart yet soulful, Painting The Invisible bears the touch of a talent to watch.
