Along Came Jones

Along Came Jones

Shortly after tuba player Johnny Blood met guitarist Dennis Finnegan at a classical music festival in Wyoming, the duo formed Along Came Jones: an old-timey revivalist quartet with originally penned songs. The group's 2013 eponymous debut album mines the vaults of Tin Pan Alley and Brill Building pop for inspiration. The opening “The Chatter and the Noise” and the following “Continental Divide” also work in some bygone Americana in the male-female vocal harmonies. The latter song boasts a robust guitar solo by Finnegan, who seems to prefer period-correct Fender Telecaster tones piped through an old tube amplifier with a cool vibrato effect. “Re: Your Letter” dials things down with a woeful ballad punctuated by lovelorn lyrics and Dennis Cabuco’s vintage organ drones wafting in the background. “Sweet Old World” abounds with such catchy melodies that it makes for a listening experience that’s more timeless than old-timey. Conversely, the standout song “Hard Times” plays like a Dustbowl ballad that would sound at home flowing from the ceramic speaker of an old wooden radio. “Drinking” closes with a dipsomaniacal anthem.
