Busting Visions

Busting Visions

From the opening verse of “Are You Gonna Waste My Time?,” listeners may experience a sense of deja vu: the barroom shuffle-stomp of Zeus’ guitars and Neil Quin's vocals have a familiar '70s kind of vibe (think Steely Dan, Mott the Hoople, Big Star), and the song burrows in with solid hooks. The Toronto band’s second full-length on the estimable Arts & Crafts label rolls along with a faintly Beatles-esque vibe on the next track, “Love/Pain,” with strings and pianos and Quin’s voice, which seems transported from a stray 1974 FM radio airwave. No indie/hipster irony, chillwave cool, or electro-clash flash is here. Busting Visions is just solid, memorable, and smart pop music using the basic DNA of classic rock fare: guitars and keys, gleaming harmonies, and catchy melodies that flow effortlessly. With a Polaris Prize nomination for its 2010 debut (Say Us) under its belt, Zeus should feel pretty confident about year-end accolades for Busting Visions. It’s as flawless and joyful a celebration—and reinvention—of “classic rock” as any we’ve heard.
