James Skelly & The Intenders are Skelly's attempt at branching out beyond the '60s-influenced pop of Liverpool's The Coral, the band Skelly called his own for more than 15 years. The names of The Intenders may sound familiar, since most of them have played with The Coral. However, the style has shifted, and Skelly couldn't in good conscience go through with the next Coral album when he was writing these U.S. heartland rockers and British pub rockers. "You've Got It All," co-penned by Paul Weller, kicks things off, sounding like a pent-up Elvis Costello & The Attractions itching to get things moving. The organ adds a thrilling edge. The smooth-moving "You and I" captures a retro feel that's a pure dance ballad from the '50s or early '60s. "Set You Free" adds a touch of R&B. "I'm a Man" adds horns to a tune that could be mistaken for a Graham Parker rocker.
