Authorized Bootleg: Neville Brothers (Live at Warfield Theatre, San Francisco, CA - Feb 27, 1989)

This 1989 live show, promoted by legendary music promoter Bill Graham and issued as part of his estate’s “Wolfgang’s Vault” series, drops in on the Neville Brothers just before their Yellow Moon album was about to be released. That album was a commercial high point for the group and they throw their enthusiasm behind tracks from that album with ease. “My Blood” and “Rosa Parks” are spirited renditions with great ensemble playing and expert vocals from this road-tested band of veterans. Aaron Neville proves he can pull out all the stops on his first hit, “Tell It Like It Is.” The band turn really fierce for the encores, which include some obvious tunes done in idiosyncratic Neville style. Chuck Berry’s “Johnny B. Goode” has both power and sensitivity uncommon to the tune. “Dizzy Miss Lizzy” adds some heated guitar solos. “Rip It Up” adds a cool New Orleans-meets-Memphis rockabilly swamp aura. “Oh Boy!” ends the medley with a striking all-hands-on-deck finale.
