Junior Brown: Greatest Hits

Junior Brown: Greatest Hits

This retrospective compilation of Junior Brown recordings shows that there are three artists living in the body of the Texas-based performer. As the inventor (and sole master) of the hybrid “guit-steel” guitar, Brown is an instrumental innovator and virtuoso. He's also a singer and songwriter who understands the artistry and cleverness required to create a lasting country song. Lastly, he's an iconoclast, remaining faithful to heroes of the '50s and '60s while gleefully pulling strands of jazz, blues, and surf music into his vision of country. Though Brown’s music has a proudly vintage tint to it, the songs are so much fun that his recordings never seem old and musty. He's both hilarious and frighteningly skillful, but the outstanding quality of his music is its energy. “Highway Patrol,” “Freeborn Man," and “Semi-Crazy” provide a jolt of caffeinated early-rock delight. While he's proud to carry on the traditions of Ernest Tubb and Dave Dudley, Brown’s unerring belief in high-voltage electricity gives him equal share in the history of high-energy rock 'n' roll.
