Infinite Light

Infinite Light

Fleetwood Mac is often called up as a point of reference for Vancouver’s Lightning Dust, but this duo could be sliced and diced a million ways (Melanie, Buffy Sainte-Marie, Tim and Jeff Buckley, Cave Singers, Bon Iver ...). Amber Webber and Joshua Wells skillfully lift some of the best ‘60s and ‘70s folk-rockisms and weave them into a more current, indie-psychedelia tableau that is blissfully spare. Mostly it’s a lonely piano, a pulsing organ tone or a galloping bongo track along with Webber’s heart-broken vibrato comprising the tiny toolbox from which these gorgeous tracks are created.  Not quite as dark or melancholy as their self-titled debut, these two Black Mountain members seem to be celebrating a topic as old as the hills; “Wake up, we’ve got a new song to sing,” intones the charmingly matter-of-fact Wells. “I fell further into you,” she confesses. One of the strongest tracks here is “I Knew,” a joyful and surging ode to the thrill of new love and lust.  Whether these two talented musicians are the stars of this love story or not, we hope they continue to make beautiful music together.
