When selecting the songs for this album of covers, she chose not just those that spoke to her life in turmoil but songs that are either well-established by others or not songs you’d expect to be coverable. So, whether it’s surviving the voodoo of The Rolling Stones’ iconic “Gimme Shelter” with Amy Helm or unscrambling the mystery of Radiohead’s “The Daily Mail” with Tracy Bonham, Cotton provides singular and captivating results. Not every soul singer can find a way into The Zombies’ “This Will Be Our Year,” but a ukulele and a whistle is all Cotton needs.
