With ex-Deep Purple shouter Ian Gillan replacing the operatic Ronnie James Dio, Sabbath pivots from neoclassical-fortified metal to cavernous hard rock. The short-lived lineup is imposingly physical on “Zero the Hero,” which is seven minutes of echo-slathered howls and savagely roiling riffs that predate groove metal; “Trashed” is a party jam that power-shifts into fifth gear thanks to Bill Ward’s mechanical pounding. The band also deploys a whole mess of blurry sound effects, giving the power-ballad title track a creepily dreamy vibe.
