San Francisco

American Music Club’s San Francisco, from 1994, still sounds very much a product of its moment, with its heavy alt-rock guitars (“Wish the World Away”) and shoegaze-y washes of distortion (“It’s Your Birthday”). Bruce Kaphan’s pedal steel guitar is what stamps this album with the band’s trademark atmospheric, slowcore vibes, whether on silvery opener “Fearless” or the languid, gliding “Love Doesn’t Belong.” Throughout, Mark Eitzel’s raspy voice both sets the tone and blends perfectly with the other instruments in the velvety mixes of these songs.
