Hypocrite

Hypocrite

Arguably one of the best-known Asian rappers, Jin got his first big break back in 2001, dominating BET's Freestyle Friday contests and earning a deal with Yonkers-based supercrew Ruff Ryders. He costarred in the hit movie 2 Fast 2 Furious and soon after released his debut album, The Rest Is History. That featured the singles "Learn Chinese" (which recycled a classic Das EFX beat) and "Senorita." The following year, he announced he was taking a break and dropped a song called "I Quit" online. Since then, he's gone fully independent, become a born-again Christian, and released six more albums and several EPs, though none of them have garnered much attention among mainstream listeners. He's much more popular in Asia (he lived in Hong Kong for a while) than the States, but to his credit, he's never given up. On Hypocrite, he raps extensively about his lord and savior Jesus Christ, with wordy verses heavy on the positive messages and religious imagery, set to beats more of the techno-meets-emo variety than traditional boom-bap. Check out "Dead Man Walking" and "Behind Enemy Lines."
