Centered on her smoldering side, this 1955 album was O’Day’s last before signing to the newly founded Verve label. Her singing is consistently marvellous, favoring a soft, floaty approach that’s ideal for these romantic laments—though she does experiment with a more exploratory tone on “The Man I Love.” Her control of the material is truly something to savor, whether she’s lingering over individual syllables on a devastating rendition of “I Cover the Waterfront” or remaining perfectly poised against the juddering instrumentation of “From This Moment On.”
