Farewell Good Night's Sleep (Digital Bonus Version)

Icelandic singer/songwriter Lay Low takes a meander down the back roads of heartache on Farewell Good Night’s Sleep, her U.S. debut album. Ms. Low's (a.k.a. Lovísa Elisabet Sigrúnardóttir) dreamy, waif-like vocals conceal a sly sophistication that lifts her beyond mere revivalism. Backed up by a sharp combo, Lay Low pines her way through such downbeat confessions as “On My Own,” “Little by Little” and the title number. Yet she’s no mere romantic martyr — in “By and By” and “The Country Ballad,” she carries herself with a survivor’s resolve. A few curve balls — such as the sultry jazz feel of “Why Do I Worry?” and the teasing Latin vibe of “My Second Hand Heart” — add variety to the album’s acoustic folk-based approach. Lay Low can sound downright eerie (especially on “I Forgot It’s There”), but she’s also capable of delivering sweetly hopeful love songs, as “Days Have Been” shows. Farewell Good Night’s Sleep’s understated production (courtesy of Liam Watson) captures the right mood of midnight reverie, suggestive of dim candles and pillows stained with tears.
