A unique emcee with an idiosyncratic sound, Homeboy Sandman rocks a highly lyrical style, with stream-of-consciousness wordplay and no shortage of oddball references, strange puns, and goofy humor. He dropped his first album, Nourishment (Second Helpings), in 2007 and has been going all out ever since. White Sands is his 10th record and the final part of an EP trilogy, each one pairing him with a different producer (Kool Herc: Fertile Crescent had El Rntc; on All That I Hold Dear it was M. Slago). Here the beats are provided by Paul White, who serves up seven tracks built on obscure loops that dive into many different genres. Vinyl pops, vibraphones, guitars, and strings set the tone for comical food raps on the opener, "Fat Belly," while "Echoes" sports a freaky, mysterious sound that would sound right at home on an MF DOOM joint. Kalimbas, pitched-up vocal clips, tinkling pianos, woozy melodies, and exotic instrumentation weave throughout the project, with a unpredictable approach that complements Homeboy's one-of-a-kind flow.
