The Fresh & Onlys

The Fresh & Onlys

The Fresh & Onlys are one of the most prolific bands of San Francisco’s cliquey indie locale. Many of the city’s fresh-faced transplant musicians are quick to absorb the psychedelic ideas and garage-rock fuzz of the Barbary Coast’s ballroom heyday, but the Fresh & Onlys have realized early on that while the ‘60s is a fun place to visit, they wouldn’t want to live there. “Feelings In My Heart” opens with the romantic waltz of a bygone girl-group, replete with low fidelity and haunting vintage reverb pouring from old tube-amps, but the driving chorus flickers with the flames ignited by early Mekons records and a love for those high-neck bass runs forged by Joy Division. The alluring vocal harmonies between Tim Cohen’s nonchalant croons and Heidi Alexander’s flirty coquettish inflections are pure chemistry-in-action, especially when they braid together on gems like the Black Tambourine-inspired “Endless Love” or “Peacock and Wing,” the album’s main standout track that confidently pulls off singing the band’s moniker and making post-punk sound like it was invented a decade earlier.
