While the G-Funk fad had largely passed by the time Rhythm-Al-Ism was released in 1998, DJ Quik kept working to perfect the style he helped to create. Sonically, the album represented a new peak for Quik. He had long since established his recipe of buttery bass tones and seductive grooves, but here every sound was sharper, louder, and rendered with exceptional detail. In a career of silky grooves, “We Still Party,” “Hand In Hand,” and “You’z a Ganxta” still stand out as some of Quik’s most sublime combinations of rubbery rhythm and rock-solid bottom. Additionally, Rhythm-Al-Ism catches Quik’s crew in its fullest form. Mausberg, Suga Free, Hi-C and 2nd II None are all longstanding Quik protégés, handpicked by the producer because when it comes to rapping on a Quik beat they sound better than anybody else in the industry. Even ultra-feminine ‘80s soul crooner El Debarge shows up to the party, for the simple reason that Quik loved his sound and wanted to work with him. Its inclusive, party-like atmosphere sets Rhythm-Al-Ism apart in a career that was dogged by gang drama in its first half, and death in its second half (Mausberg was murdered in 2000).
