A fresh take on the holidays
Is there anything as challenging as taking old and worn holiday tunes and try to do something new with them, without destroying them with some desperate avant garde? This is a success at exactly what it's attempting to do: New and organic versions of familiar songs. This is fresh 21st century futuristic mainstream music! The Yuletide Voices-team is making a valuable contribution to those who generally feel tortured by holiday songs. I'd gladly spend more money at my local mall if they played this album instead of Jingle Bells Rock and other cheap sound pollution.
Gorgeous singing by Rigmor Gustafsson
i was looking for some relaxing but soulful music to add to my holiday playlist, so I purchased tracks 2 & 12 (Betlehems Stjärna & Jesu Parvule) by the wonderful Swedish jazz singer Rigmor Gustafsson. Her voice reminds me a little of Bjork -pure and soulful but without so much angst. The arrangements are lush with gorgeous brass harmonies. One track is sung in Swedish, the other in Engish and are both nice tunes, if you'd like some international music on your Xmas playlist or if you just want some chill-out carols.
I skipped the first track (Angel Bells), also with Rigmor Gustafsson singing, because the arrangement was too pop-commercial for my taste.
