At the time this music was recorded, Fu Manchu were a crew of former Orange County punk rockers who were just reinventing themselves by turning on to the metal styles of the '70s. In an era ruled by Pearl Jam and Nirvana, the marijuana-infused revelry of Blue Cheer and Deep Purple was largely derided, and therein Fu Manchu saw their opportunity. On these early singles they repossessed the throbbing, wooly riffs of The Melvins as emblems of a Southern California lifestyle. Songs like “Senioritis,” “El Don,” and “Space Sucker” strike the perfect balance between the grunge world and the groovy, goofy revivalism of Dazed and Confused.
