Album Review
The tuba is probably the most underestimated instrument in creative music (along with the oboe). Leo Bachmann, a Swiss musician coming from both a classical and a jazz background, tried to settle the score with Palette of Sounds, a CD of tuba solos. The 13 pieces included here range from compositions to improvisations, but all have at least a predetermined idea or concept underpinning them. Each short picture (nothing over four minutes) approaches the tuba differently: "Dirty" is essentially a drone, "Merger" gradually blends three different riffs into one, "Missing Echo" is a game of call and response without the response, etc. Some sonorities that Bachmann gets out of his instrument, like the multiphonics on "Mixed Colors," feel otherworldly. Beautifully recorded, the richness of this tuba makes for a very different experience. Anyone playing this instrument should listen to Palette of Sounds, if only to realize the possibilities at hand.
