From the burgeoning indie-folk/rock scene in Brooklyn, NY, comes brother-sister duo This Frontier Needs Heroes, offering their own take on American ‘60s folk, aged some forty-plus years. Brad Lauretti plays acoustic guitar and has a warm, hoarse warble upon which most tracks are built; sister Jessica adds a sweeter trill, gifting lift to his vocals on stark tunes dressed up with glittering tambourines, electric piano or an occasional concertina. There’s a distinct vein of gothic-Americana pulsing through TFNH, with tracks like the brooding “Leopard Eyes” and “Bend the Bow” conjuring Will Oldham, and the gently swaying, poetic “Pardon Me” invoking the soul of Leonard Cohen. Bookend tracks “Firefly” and “My Way or the Highway” use a muffled, rumbling gong lurking behind ukulele and strings to great effect, opening and closing this debut collection with somber grace and beauty... and immense promise.
