For the record...

The Book of Love is a Magnetic Fields song. Gabriel is covering it. Merritt, in turn, covers Gabriel on "Not One of Us."
Gabriel brings a sense of breadth that Merritt's original is perhaps missing. It's is lovely.

Great teaser for "Scratch my Back"

This new version of Peter Gabriel's "The Book of Love" is a vast improvement over his earlier work, which appears in the soundtrack for "Shall We Dance". I chose my words carefully -- "vast improvement", over an already wonderful rendition. We get Melanie Gabriel's voice in this version, perceivable changes in the arrangement, and a much more intimate tempo. This will be a great song to have around for Valentine's Day.

The second track of this release is a very interesting cover of "Not One Of Us" by Stephin Merrit of "The Magnetic Fields" fame. Merrit has somehow managed to make "Not One Of Us" sound old and distant, almost aged. Ironic, as the original version always felt a bit edgy and forward-looking. It took me some effort to understand Merrit's version; once I managed to keep myself from invoking the original tune in my head and focused on this song, it really shines on its own merit. Very nice arrangement. This cover must have been a lot of fun to make.

Will render you useless

The first time I listened to it I was walking along the beach on a beautiful sunny, brisk day. When it ended I was literally dumbstruck. Jaw hanging open. Walking on autopilot, not really seeing anything in front of me. I didn't know what to do with myself -- what could I possibly listen to after that? I've never felt such a strong reaction to a song. It will destroy you with its beauty. It is not a song meant to go in a playlist. It is meant to be listened to by itself, really listened to, and savored.

As the leader of Genesis in the early '70s, Peter Gabriel helped move progressive rock to new levels of theatricality. He was no less ambitious as a solo artist, but he was more subtle in his methods. With his first eponymous solo album in 1977, he began exploring darker, more cerebral territory, incorporating avant-garde, electronic, and worldbeat influences into his music. The record, as well as its two similarly titled successors, established Gabriel as a critically acclaimed cult artist, and...
