Album Review

That was quick. Lazarus A.D.'s 2007 debut, The Onslaught (reissued in 2009 by Metal Blade), was a retro-thrash album, not dissimilar to efforts by Fueled by Fire, Bonded by Blood, Merciless Death, Hatchet, et al. One album later, they've undergone a fairly radical transformation, and are now practitioners of American groove metal (think Machine Head, Lamb of God, Trivium, or even late-period Bush-era Anthrax). Fortunately, they're good at it. The slowed-down riffs and thick, bass-heavy sound allow for bluesier guitar solos than their previous style, and the songs are a little catchier, too. There are a few soft, melodic guitar intros scattered here and there, and the title track is their attempt at a classic Metallica anthem à la "Fade to Black" (with "message" lyrics about environmental damage thrown in). While this style isn't any more original than the one they were employing on The Onslaught, Lazarus A.D. are an energetic young band with some decent riffs in their book, and this album will make young fans bang their heads while reminding older listeners of their own glory days.

Impressed

It is hard for me to get excited about thrash these days. This band rocked it out. Go Packers!

Fantastic Record!

You gotta love this. They did not just re-make "The Onslaught", this is a more mature record, it's super heavy. Really good stuff. Nice to see them growing. I love every track from start to end... listened to it a few times now. If you're looking for The Onslaught 2, and that's the only thing that will make you happy, then go check out some other bands... but this album is really great. Still thrashy, super heavy... check it out!

Great Sophmore Album

Glad these guys didn't lose their touch on their second album. Let me get this out of the way, you'll be disappointed if you're expecting The Onslaught 2. The Strong Prevail is the closest thing to an Onslaught-sounding track on this album. However, this album is plenty heavy but with a lot more melody, which just makes everything catchier. Not a bad song on the album, every song on here is worth listening to. Overall a great album and rock on!!!

Wisconsin-based thrash outfit Lazarus A.D. formed in spring of 2005 around the talents of guitarist/vocalist Dan Gapen, bassist/vocalist Jeff Paulick, guitarist Alex Lackner, and drummer Ryan Shutler. Employing a ferocious sonic assault that draws heavily from the Bay Area thrash scene of the '80s while maintaining a modern melodic, groove-based edge, the quartet landed its first break in 2006 after opening for Anthrax. Fueled by the local success of their three-song EP, the band hit the road and...
