Shine Among the Shadow

Shine Among the Shadow

There’s a distinct ‘80s vibe to Jack Marques’ solo debut album Shine Among the Shadow. The former Mars Hill singer/guitarist possesses the heroic vocal pipes of a classic metal singer, with a feel for melodic grandeur and crunchy guitar riffage to match. His God-centered focus brings Stryper to mind – in fact, Stryper bassist Tim Gaines makes a guest appearance on “That Song.” Shine Among the Shadow’s tracks flex real rock muscle, aided by the fret-burning firepower of King’s X guitarist Ty Tabor. Marquez lays down a solid, synthesizer-bolstered groove on “The Party” and simmers to a sweaty beat in “Live In Tomorrow.” The title track offers genuine headbanger bombast along with palpable spiritual longing. Marques is convincing on the ballads as well, with the piano-centered “The Whole World Over” and the acoustic-guitar-driven “Movin’ On (Lory’s Song)” standing out for their heartfelt, worshipful content. Retro or not, Shine Among the Shadow works on its own terms as one rocker’s fervent testimony to the power of salvation.
