Joined by Old Crow Medicine Show’s Ketch Secor, who acts as co-producer, singer and multi-instrumentalist, Diana Jones crafts a solid album of songs rooted in the country and bluegrass music of her birth family in Tennessee. Her refined vocal style leaves plenty of room for gentlemen solos and grand ensemble playing, but it’s clear that Jones is steering the ship. It’s her subtle shifts in tone that deliver the doom of “I Told the Man.” “Poverty” settles on an uplifting traditional country melody to deliver its financial frustrations. “My Love Is Gone” turns toward heartbreak at a slower pace. Jim Lauderdale throws his vocal support onto two stellar tracks. “Don’t Forget Me” is an upbeat country tune that follows a man about to leave the chains of prison for the first time in a very long time. “Funeral Singer” heads for another Appalachian funeral, heart in hand. Arguably best is “Poor Heart,” a somber tune backed by a weeping fiddle that, like much of this fine album, would fit comfortably on an old-time radio program from many decades ago.
