Play Witcha Mama

Willie D’s first album after departing the Rap-A-Lot organization shows the influence of West Coast G-funk even as it retains the essential loudmouth aggression of his early albums. As usual, Willie speaks with unreserved vitriol on subjects that other rappers won’t touch, like church corruption, which is the subject of “Guess My Religion.” Willie’s special talent is his ability to at once be more outrageous and more truthful than the average rapper. He’s the only one who could put a song called “I Wanna F**k Your Mama” next to a portrait of social realism like “N***as Are Dyin’,” and make each one as good as the other. Though the album doesn’t pack the punishing funk of Controversy and Goin’ Out Lika Soldier, Willie is a good fit for the G-funk style. His rough, countrified flow is the ideal complement to the buttery smooth beats of “Throat,” “Somethin’ Good” and “Smoke’m.” The title song features a guest verse from Ice Cube, who is so well matched to Willie D in flow and disposition that you wish the pair had collaborated on a full-length when they were both in their prime.
