Steps To Heaven

Steps To Heaven

At the age of 80, country music legend Charlie Louvin has found himself back on top. After the effusive praise, including a Grammy nomination for Best Traditional Folk album for his 2007 self-titled comeback album, Louvin returns in 2008 with Steps to Heaven, a collection of gospel tunes that were recorded live with a three sister gospel choir (Alfreda, Regina and Ann McCrary), gospel pianist Derrick Lee, and guitarist-bassist Chris Scruggs. Louvin’s voice is a weathered treasure, offering no varnish to these tales of spiritual rejuvenation. He delivers his sermons with a free hand, playing with and against his vocal choir. The sparse arrangements ensure an immediacy unusual in an age of computer doctored recordings; this album could have been recorded decades ago. “There’s A Higher Power” motors on gospel’s emotive joy. “Where We’ll Never Grow Old,” “I Am Bound for the Promised Land,” and “How Beautiful Heaven Must Be” immerse themselves in calming, self-assuring beliefs. Just when you think they don’t make them like this anymore, Charlie Louvin proves they do.
