It’s almost impossible not to hear the Who and the Kinks echoing through the tracks of the Len Price 3’s Pictures. Pete Townshend’s lyrical wit and Keith Moon’s frenetic round-the-kit drumming are referenced in nearly every track here. That said, these three hyperactive Brits manage to do more than pay homage to their heroes on their engaging third album. Glenn Page sings with credible working-class attitude while unleashing defiant guitar flourishes. The trio favors succinct upbeat tunes, with “You Tell Lies,” “The Girl Who Became a Machine” and the title number connecting most solidly. The buoyant vocal harmonies on “After You’ve Gone” and “The Great Omani” add some sweetness to the album’s tart, biting edge, and strings and organ lend a gently melancholy tone to “Jack In the Greens.” Though boy/girl situations predominate, Page and company display a wider lyrical reach at times — a Ray Davies-like class-consciousness colors “If You Live Round Here,” for instance. Pictures doesn’t try for overarching statements; it sticks to the fundamentals and does well with them.
