"Expecting Company?"

"Expecting Company?"

As the EP's cover art suggests, "Expecting Company?" evokes the sound and feel of a vintage '60s album from Lee Hazlewood and Nancy Sinatra, except that here Henry Wagons plays Lee and a variety of guests play Nancy. Named one of "Melbourne's Top 100 Influential People," Wagons has made less of an impression in the United States his music dreams about. That's a shame, since his take on vintage American musical styles is refreshing and (unlike many others who've traveled similar terrain) quite fun. He's not strict in his delivery, and the smart and effective songwriting brings the lust of "I'm in Love with Mary Magdalene" with Sophia Brous into surprisingly lighthearted territory. "I Still Can't Find Her"—with The Go-Betweens' Robert Forster, who cowrote the track—is strong in both longing and vocal technique. "A Hangman's Work Is Never Done," with Patience Hodgson, emulates Nick Cave's death howl and American Gothic fixation but with a sense of hijinks.
