Replica, Vol. 3

Replica, Vol. 3

The third volume in the Irwin Chusid-compiled Replica series opens with an abrasive lo-fi indie-punk number titled “Not Sold in Stores.” It’s a high-energy tune that drives rapid-fire drum machines headfirst into lyrical rambling that hardly ever stops to gasp for air. This is followed by a ramshackle cover of John Lennon’s “Everybody’s Got Something to Hide (Except for Me And My Monkey)” which puts Casiotone keyboards upfront, burying the guitars as R. Stevie Moore sounds like he’s singing through a crumpled pair of sweatpants. The madcap whimsy of “What Was I Thinking About” makes Syd Barrett seem sane as Lane Steinberg’s androgynous vocals take center stage. Don Fleming helps give “My Little Lamb” the same kind of rock ‘n’ roll sleaze heard in his own band Gumball. Moore’s cover of Led Zeppelin’s “Friends” sticks close to the original (well as close as a four-track can get) with Moore’s synthesizers doing a great job of approximating the sweeping string parts of the original. Mike Watt’s contributions to “Sackful” sound like he and Moore have been playing together for years.
