Producer Phil Pratt takes a colorful but minimalist approach to mixing mid-'70s instrumentals from his house ensemble, the Sunshot Band, as well as drummer Sly Dunbar’s outfit, Skin, Flesh & Bones. Lively cuts like “Skin Dub” recall Joe Gibbs productions (à la Culture’s “See Them a Come”), while others echo Niney the Observer’s sparse and moody creations. Pratt strips “Oversize Dub” down to rumbling bass, watery rim shots, and scattered piano thrums, and inserts bare vocal shards into “Bandwagon Dub.” That pinpoint approach makes Dub in Blood a sublime listen.
